Spin Frustration in Molecular Nanocarbons

Spin frustration arises when interacting electron spins cannot simultaneously realize all energetically preferred antiferromagnetic couplings. This leads to highly degenerate ground states and pronounced quantum fluctuations. The aim of this project is to transfer key ideas of frustrated magnetism and spin-liquid-like states from inorganic solids to purely organic pi-conjugated architectures. Within the project, we will design and synthesize rigid triangular and polyhedral frameworks bearing multiple persistent radical centers. By exploiting high spatial symmetry and a well-defined spin topology, we will target systems with strong and, as far as possible, balanced antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We hypothesize that such symmetry-enforced competition can produce pronounced frustration at temperatures accessible with standard cryogenic techniques.

Requirements
The candidate is required to have:

  1. A PhD degree in synthetic organic chemistry awarded no earlier than 7 years before the year of employment. The degree must be recognized in Poland (if necessary, nostrification of the degree must be carried out prior to employment). For details, see https://kwalifikator.nawa.gov.pl/.
  2. Scientific achievements in the field of synthetic organic chemistry documented in peer-reviewed publications.
  3. Experience in designing and carrying out multi-step chemical syntheses, also in anaerobic conditions and on the milligram scale.
  4. Experience in the use of analytical methods for the characterization of organic compounds, including NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry.
  5. Experience in mentoring undergraduate and/or PhD students.
  6. Active participation in scientific research and research projects.
  7. Fluency in spoken and written English.
  8. Publications in renowned international scientific journals within the discipline of chemical sciences.

Responsibilities

  1. Conducting research as part of an NCN OPUS project within the research team.
  2. Designing and carrying out chemical syntheses; characterization of products; analytical studies.
  3. Performing supporting tasks necessary for the implementation of the research project.
  4. Participating in scientific meetings and seminars, and taking an active part in international scientific conferences and other research-related travel.
  5. Preparing reports, analyses, manuscripts, and grant applications within the scope related to the project.
  6. Supervising undergraduate students and PhD students.
