PROJECT NCN OPUS 2024/53/B/ST5/03556

The main objective of this project is the design, synthesis, and characterization of new series of multifunctional MOP-polymer and MOF-polymer hybrid materials using functional macromolecules as modifiers. To achieve this goal, we propose an original post-synthetic functionalization strategy for preparing MOF-polymer hybrids using multisite grafting approach. This methodology will be based on two synthetic pathways, which include irreversible click reaction. In our approach we suggest to precisely tailor both components of the hybrid system – the MOP or the MOF and the polymer. We propose to use highly programmable polymers and copolymers derived from norbornene- or acetylene-containing monomers, which can be polymerized in highly controlled fashion. These polymers will contain grafting functions which will allow their binding to the surface of MOP cages and MOF crystallites. The secondary functions will bring additional properties to the final hybrid network. The combination of these three powerful toolkits should allow the construction of new functional hybrid materials with desired properties: better adsorbent-adsorbate interactions for small molecules, e.g., volatile organic compounds (VOCs), incorporation of catalytic function (for hydrolysis of phosphate esters or mustard gas) or to build stimuli-responsive systems (responsive to solvent, temperature, pH, etc.). Finally, we believe that this approach will result in the development of new ways for improving physical and mechanical properties of hybrid materials including processability and stability under environmental conditions.
