Employment under the National Science Center project of the OPUS project of the National Science Center 2023/49/B/NZ2/00356, under the title “The interplay between nucleoid associated proteins and transcription factors at regulation of gene expression in antibiotic producing bacteria “.

The principal investigator of the project is professor Dagmara Jakimowicz.

Our research aims to examine the role of nucleoid associated proteins (NAPs) in the regulation of bacterial gene expression. NAPs bind DNA to organize bacterial chromosomes and increase their compaction. Binding of these proteins to DNA is believed to modify the accessibility of DNA to transcription factors and RNA polymerase – the proteins that control gene transcription. Our project examines the influence of NAPs on gene expression in soil bacteria – Streptomyces, which are producers of a variety of bioactive compounds, including antibiotics. We will verify if elimination of NAPs from Streptomyces strains may increase the production of bioactive compounds, such as antibiotics. To answer our research questions, postdoctoral researcher will aim to determine how the binding of NAPs to chromosome is regulated depending on physiological state of the cell and DNA topology, and will examine NAPs influence on DNA topology.
